A horror film that revolves around the creation of Dumb and dumber too? Yes, Daniel Kun says there was a chance. During a recent meeting with The Hollywood Reporter for their Writers Roundtable, Kwan is known alongside his frequent collaborator Daniel Scheinert like the Daniels, revealed the directing duo were once contacted Dumb and Dumber franchise star Jim Carey to make a comedic horror film about the making of the 2014 sequel.

According to Kwan, Carrey’s interest in “found footage” projects was sparked when he started watching 2007 Paranormal Activity and was interested in doing a play that would follow the cast and crew of Dumb and dumber too while filming parts at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. For those whose horror radar is off, yes, the Stanley is better known as the inspiration behind it StephenKing‘s film novel, The glow. According to Carrey and others who were on the set of the buddy comedy, bizarre events were a regular occurrence on the “haunted set.”

Kwan recalls Carrey telling him, “The whole time we were shooting, things were breaking, people were getting hurt, doors were swaying, and it felt like there was haunting.” liar liar star to reach out to the team about his idea for a comedy-meets-found-footage-horror. Kwan was quick to respond and recalls that he and Scheinert immediately got back to Carrey and said, “‘Okay, we’re on it. Kwan accepted their fate but was quite disheartened after the career-defining opportunity, saying the duo responded with an “OK” and moved on.

Of course, this would only be the beginning of the Daniels’ career with the team that created one of the weirdest and most talked about films of 2016, The Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe-LED Swiss army man. This year, the pair returned to take audiences on a multidimensional journey into the critically acclaimed, Everything everywhere at once. That Michelle Yeoh-led sci-fi comedy was an instant fan favorite and would take home the title of highest-grossing A24 film of all time.

Since the time of Dumb and dumber toowe had movies like Eugene Kotlyarenko‘s Spree strike a satirical horror tone, but we still wish from the bottom of our hearts that the Daniels had been able to put a comedic twist on a found footage horror.
