Release date, cast, plot and more

The Witcher Franchise recently went to an unexpected place. Henry Cavill, whose presence was a major reason this show was more fun than it needed to be, decided to leave the building. He’s set to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth, presumably so Cavill can go back to being Superman with fewer projects on his plate. Hemsworth continued the semi-stoic thing The hunger Gamesbut can he please a rabid fandom who loved that Cavill lived and breathed the video games like they were his own nerd kids?

That remains to be seen. Cavill’s season 2 co-star (and onscreen mentor as Vesemir), Kim Bosnia, told us that Cavill was the show’s soul, heart and brain. We’ll see Henry for another season, but the franchise feels different now, and Hemsworth can’t look forward to the inevitable scrutiny his arrival in Season 4 will bring. However, the franchise must now plan for a pre-planned trip back in time to before elves were considered vermin.

This is quite a departure from the conflicts seen in the OG series, which saw Geralt of Rivia and Jaskier tangle with some angry, outlaw elves. This conflict led to Jaskier (with a bang) amplifying what actually happened and painting Geralt as a kicker of elf asses. It was something that was completely ridiculous, but Geralt didn’t bother to correct the bard. Now the elves are named with the prequel limited series The Witcher: Origin of the Blood.

Netflix’s four-part event series will stream on Christmas Day. A teaser trailer shows enough sword and ax to get John Wick’s attention. Now I’m dreaming of a crossover, but first here’s this teaser trailer that travels back in time 1,200 years:

Jodie Turner-Smith, Jacob Collins-Levy and Sophia Brown also star in this series, which features Michelle Yeoh portraying Scian as an elven swordmaster. We’ll likely see the beginning of the first Witcher prototype, but before that happens we’ll see a world where elves haven’t been avoided nearly as much as they have in the actual series. We won’t see Geralt, Ciri or Jennifer, but I can always dream that Jaskier will travel through time. Maybe not? Oh well. Let’s make an official summary:

Set in an elf world 1200 years before the time of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri, The Witcher: Blood Origin tells a story lost in history: the creation of the first prototype witcher and the events leading up to the crucial conjunction of the spheres , as the worlds of monsters, humans and elves merged into one.

The Witcher: Origin of the Blood Premiering on December 25th.
