The holidays are here! And that means it’s time for the most famous kickline in the world: The Christmas spectacle with the Radio City Rockettes.
Choreographer for almost a century Russell Markert In 1925, the Rockettes formed this legendary dance company and have kicked and blinded more than 69 million people around the world. (They debuted on Radio City in 1933.) In fact, these artistic athletes are known for doing 160 high kicks per show.
This year the Christmas spectacle with the Radio City Rockettes, presented by QVC, debuted at Radio City Music Hall on November 18 and runs through January 2, 2023. The 84 Rockettes aren’t just fierce dancers, they’re multitasking prodigies who sometimes don’t perform outside of the holiday season. In fact, the company was made up of accountants, nurses, and college students.

The Rockettes even have a number of identical twins on the kickline. “Being a Rockette with my twin sister Sarah is a gift we don’t take for granted. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and for being able to share this sisterhood with my twin sister,” Katie Daniel said of her fourth season with the Rockettes. “I love to see how we both grow and learn each year. We moved to New York City when we were 18 to pursue our lifelong dream together, and I love to say we made it… together.”
The 2022 Christmas Spectacular will also feature the “Dance of the Frost Fairies,” which will transform Radio City into a winter wonderland. The new number features the Rockettes as winged fairies along with fairy drones flying over the audience.
Then there are the classic pieces that audiences come back to year after year. “We’re sticking to the timeless traditions that audiences love and adore, like Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, which has been on the show since 1933,” says Daniel. “There’s no place on earth like Radio City during the holidays, and there’s no show on earth like it That Christmas spectacle.”
Who are the Radio City Rockettes?
The Radio City Rockettes are made up of 84 strong, unique and talented women. Many of them have other jobs outside of the Christmas season. There have been Rockettes who have been college students, moms, teachers, nurses, coaches, accountants and more!
This year there are 18 brand new Rockettes, 17 of which competed in the Rockettes Conservatory. The dance company’s free, invitation-only training program offers intensive learning Rockettes precision style. The 18 women come from two countries (USA and Australia) and 11 different states. There have been Rockettes who have been college students, moms, teachers, nurses, coaches, accountants and more!

When will the Radio City Rockettes perform at the Thanksgiving Day Parade?

They have about a month to learn the choreography and then two weeks in the theater to rehearse technical elements. “Rehearsals are an all-consuming process that requires a lot of courage, focus and attention,” says Rockette Katie Daniel. “We practice together all day, and then we go home and practice alone, and then we wake up and practice more. It’s Christmas without a break!”
