Pleo today announces the appointment of Meri Williams as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
The appointment marks Pleo’s continued investment in helping small and medium-sized businesses move beyond the hassle of old-fashioned finance processes and achieve real-time monitoring of business spending — especially relevant during times of economic uncertainty for many organizations. Williams’ appointment follows that of Abigail Slater, who joined us in October from American Express as Pleo’s new Operations Manager in UK&I.
Williams joins the Pleo executive team having previously worked at Healx, an AI-driven rare disease treatment company. With experience across a range of team sizes and organizations, Williams brings her specific knowledge of the fintech sector from her role as CTO at mobile-first challenger bank Monzo. Here she helped grow Monzo’s technology team by 300% and led significant investments in platform resiliency and business continuity as Monzo’s customer base grew to over four million.
She is also a published author and international speaker, and chairs The Lead Developer Conference, which has expanded to London, New York, Berlin and San Francisco since its inception in 2015. Meri and her wife Elly are active advocates for better representation in technology roles and sponsor grants to help more girls launch STEM careers in their hometown of Stellenbosch, South Africa through micro-charity One Goes Up as well as arts grants and women in technology Scholarships at the University of Bath. She also serves as a Trustee on the Board of Stonewall, the UK’s leading charity for LGBTQ+ rights.
Comment on Joining Pleo, Meri Williams said:
“I’ve been incredibly impressed with Pleo’s journey over the past few years, from a disruptor in the business spend management market to an essential platform of choice for thousands of businesses across Europe. Now the organization has grown again and become a vital lifeline for thousands of businesses across Europe. The excitement of this journey lies in how I, along with the Pleo team, can continue the company’s journey to become an essential partner at a time of economic uncertainty and concern. I am very excited to join this world class team that has inspired me in every interaction so far.”
Nicco Perra, co-founder of Pleocommented:
“We are excited to have Meri join the Pleo team. She brings a wealth of industry experience to Pleo and Meri’s background in leveraging technology and data insights to create value for businesses, which aligns perfectly with Pleo’s growth plans – as well as our ongoing role in helping businesses gain more control and transparency over their obtain expenses. As a valued voice for LGBTQ+ rights and the role of women in technology, as well as fast-growing tech organizations, Meri has simultaneously enhanced diversity, inclusion and the way teams work. This fits with Pleo’s determination to nurture workplaces, including his own, that are based on belonging and where everyone feels valued. Meri will be an incredible force for us and the companies we work with.”
Williams joins Pleo at a crucial time for the company. Since February 2021, Pleo has expanded into six new markets in Europe, and over the past year users on the platform have doubled while transaction volumes have tripled. Forward-thinking companies Hello Fresh and E.ON Next are just a few of the names that rely on Pleo’s platform to simplify their financial processes. This momentum comes as Pleo achieved unicorn status in 2021 when it raised $350 million in Series C funding. The company is valued at $4.7 billion, making it one of the most valuable FinTech startups.
