NFL Week 11: Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs Still Rule AFC West; more Sunday classes

Chiefs 30, Chargers 27

Kansas City: This is Patrick Mahomes’ league. When the Chiefs got the ball back at 1:46 on the clock, they knew it was coming. They knew Mahomes would deliver. As cool as can be, masterful in his performance, ball game. That’s what Mahomes does. Of course, the winning connection was Mahomes to Travis Kelce by 31 seconds. But the Chiefs need to be encouraged by the many contributions of all the young players working to establish themselves as offensive playmakers. … Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, Chris Jones doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the dominant season he’s delivering to the Kansas City defense. His second sack of the game (ninth of the season) couldn’t have been handier. … So much for the rest of the AFC West threatening Kansas City’s supremacy. The 8-2 Chiefs have now defeated the second-place team in the division and have a three-game lead over the Chargers and a five-game lead over the Raiders and Broncos.

Chiefs comeback to defeat Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 30-27 Sunday night, winning the season series against their rivals AFC West. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Late in the fourth quarter, Patrick Mahomes was 27-23 behind and led the Chiefs on a six-game 75-yard drive that was topped off with a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce.
  • The Chiefs rebounded after being down 20-13 at halftime and beat the Chargers 17-7 in the second half.
  • The Chiefs improve to 8-2 and extend their AFC West lead. Kansas City remains No. 1 in the AFC.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

Chiefs are thriving despite missing multiple receivers

No Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs’ longest-serving receiver. No JuJu Smith-Schuster, the team’s new No. 1 receiver. No Kadarius Toney, the team’s newest receiver, a dynamic addition to the league’s strongest offense. Even under unusual and unfavorable circumstances, Mahomes, the league’s most talented quarterback, made another dramatic comeback against the Chargers, the division rivals he’s consistently beaten in this way.

HALF: Chargers 20, Chiefs 13

481 yards total offense in the first half between two teams. However, the LAC defense really buckled in the second quarter, forcing two straight threes and outs. Can they continue like this in the second half?
