HOUSTON — Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith sounded a little upset for perhaps the first time after another bitter loss on Sunday.
The freshman coach was thoroughly dominated by the Washington Commanders during a 23-10 loss at NRG Stadium when quarterback Davis Mills was intercepted for a pick-six to start the game and the Texans with a season-low 148 Yards total attack ended acknowledged the team’s desolate state.
The Texans are 1-8-1 after losing their fifth straight game.
“Guys, right now it’s a football team where we’re not doing a lot of things well,” Smith said after watching Mills get caught twice and sacked five times. “We’re building. We’re not quite there yet. We’re not a good football team at the moment. That’s how most teams start.
“You keep working on things and eventually you get a little bit better. We didn’t play like that last week. It wasn’t always like that. Today was one of those games where we have to take it like the other team was a lot better than us. “
The Texans had just five yards total offense in the first half, the fewest net yards in a half in franchise history. They had eight yards in the first half of a 40-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills last season. It was the fewest net yards by an NFL team in a half since the Raiders lost 12 yards in a win over the Denver Broncos in 2015.
Smith was involved in a heated post-game exchange with local reporters.
The Texans have been booed numerous times by their own fans.
“Let me stop you, it hasn’t happened all year,” Smith said. “We were booed, yes. Any time something is bad, the fans will boo. You have the right to do that. What’s your question?”
How does this get better?
“By bringing a better product to the football field,” Smith said.

Why not switch quarterbacks and replace Mills with backup Kyle Allen? “Because I didn’t think I should do that today,” Smith said.
“I’m not going to tell you that,” Smith said. “What do you expect from me? We just got beaten. If we should have done something immediately, we would have done it immediately. Where we are with our football team, we are looking for answers about what we are doing. We will keep working.”
The Texans allowed for a lot of pressure, and rookie running back Dameon Pierce rushed for a season-low eight yards with 10 carries. The Texans were abused at the line of scrimmage. Rookie safety Jalen Pitre dropped two potential interceptions.
“Our fans deserve a lot more,” said Smith. “We need to bring a better product to the football field. Have you considered any changes? We’re trying to do what we think is necessary to give ourselves the best chances.”
Mills has thrown 11 interceptions this season and has struggled a lot in recent weeks. He has declined since his rookie season.
“Are you asking me if I change the quarterback position right after the game?” Smith said. “Like I said, we check all sorts of things throughout the game to see if a move in any position gives us a better chance of winning the game. They say it starts with the quarterback. No, it starts at the beginning. Today I don’t know how many quarterbacks would succeed with that kind of pressure.”
