Ann Cook Horton, 90, of Newport News, died Sunday November 20, 2022. Ann was born to Joseph Howard and Addie Woods Kyles Cook and grew up in Winston-Salem, NC surrounded by a large extended family. She graduated from James A. Gray High School and worked at General Electric until she married Harry H. Horton, also from Winston-Salem. Ann and Harry moved to Tidewater in 1954. From 1972 to 1995, Ann worked as an administrative assistant for the arts and music departments at Newport News Public Schools, a job she enjoyed because of her love of the arts. Ann and Harry were charter members and life members of the Reformation Lutheran Church in Newport News.
Besides her family and church, Ann loved to dance, travel and play any type of board or card game which she was very competitive at. Up until her later years in the Mennowood community, one of her favorite pastimes was sitting on a swing set on the large porch of her home and being busy doing a crossword puzzle or reading books. Music was also a big part of her life; She sang in the church choir for decades and attended many concerts in everything from high school bands to symphony productions. She enjoyed many theatrical and musical performances at the Ferguson Center for the Arts, where she served as usher. She had a loyal circle of friends from her early days at Hampton and Newport News, where she and Harry moved in 1954. Her grandkids were always craving Mamaws Flokes with ice cream and Pepsi. Her children had to be shooed away from her cast-iron pan of fried okra in the summer.
Ann preceded her 49-year-old husband Harry H. Horton in death. Ann is survived by her three children: Tonia Woods Horton of Santa Fe, NM, Mikki Lubertazzi (Danny) of Newport News, and Tim Horton (Lisa) of Richmond; five grandchildren, Dustin (Lee-Wilson) and Christian Lubertazzi, Trey, Joseph and Noah Horton and 2 great-grandchildren, Sydney and Charles Lubertazzi.
Pallbearers will be her five grandchildren, son-in-law Danny, and the honorary pallbearer, son Tim.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park. After the service, there will be a visitation at the Weymouth Funeral Home from 1:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Memorial donations can be sent to the Reformation Lutheran Church or the Peninsula Rescue Mission at Newport News.
